Special early release of Dream Chronicles: The Book of Air! Meet the producer!

We know you've all been waiting for it: Dream Chronicles: The Book of Air Collector's Edition is now available in a special early release! This game starts the second trilogy of the Dream Chronicles saga. The Collector's Edition includes fun extras like additional gameplay, more concept art, the game soundtrack, and a sneak peak at the next chapter, The Book of Water.

We interviewed the game's producer, Ryan, to give you an in depth look at the latest installment of the Dream Chronicles saga. As the producer, Ryan does everything he can to allow everyone else to focus on doing what they do best!

What's new in Dream Chronicles: The Book of Air?

The player will now, for the first time, play as Lyra, Faye’s daughter. The Book of Air picks up ten years after the end of The Chosen Child, right before Lyra’s 18th birthday. Players will discover an airship early on and will travel all over the Dream world. As we all know, Lyra is half-fairy, which means in this chapter she'll actually be able to use the Dream Jewels and Dream Pieces we are familiar with from previous Dream games.

How did you come up with the new features?

The developer, Kat Games, came up with all the new features, including using Dream Jewels as powers. With each Dream Chronicles game, Dream Jewels were used differently. In The Book of Air there was a need to add these powers and a need to have a new use for the Jewels and they just fit together perfectly.

Can you give us an example of how you developed the puzzles?

Early in the game, players encounter three puzzles that will each reveal a symbol needed to unlock a combination. When testing this very early, we had the expectation that players would have problems remembering these symbols when they needed them. We were wrong. The puzzles themselves were too difficult. The interesting part was that after they had spent close to 30 minutes solving the puzzles, they were instantly able to recall the symbols and use them with out going back to refresh their memories! This is why we do so much testing with real users.

What do you personally love about the game?

It’s hard to choose, there are so many, but I would have to say I love seeing the entire Dream world on a map and being able to travel via airship to the many locations.

Which puzzle do you think fans will most look forward to in Book of Air?

The puzzles of Treehouse Village are great. There are multiple ways to solve them; there is not a single solution. In some of our early user testing, it was great watching the creative solutions that the users came up with!

What’s your favorite scene?

I love Wind Music Island. It’s a beautiful location with some really unique puzzles that tie together quite nicely.

Which of Lyra’s fairy powers would you want to have if you could?

Thunder. Growing up in the Midwest, when we had storms, we had loud, booming thunder and fantastic shows of lightning. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve heard thunder over the past several years living in San Francisco. I’ve begun to miss them.

What’s your number one game tip for playing The Book of Air?

Lyra’s Dream Jewel powers are new to the Dream Chronicles series. If you feel like you’re stuck and can’t seem to figure out what to do next, chances are, you may need to use one of them!

  1. Since the game released, there are many many mixed reactions and reviews from fans about games. What your team will do in ‘The Book of Water’ to make these fans feel secure about their favorite series?

  2. @ thinhin_of_you: Thanks for your question. With each new version of Dream Chronicles, we always strive to one-up the previous games by adding new features, new types of game play, etc. By making innovations, you always run the risk of surprising some fans when making these changes; what one fan may love, another may dislike. I can’t say exactly what we will do with The Book of Water at this time, but I can promise that we are reading what everyone has to say and are taking a critical look at the next chapter to see what we should continue and where we can further improve upon it. At the end of the day, we are making these games for our fans so we are listening and are prepared to act.

  3. Thanks for answering, Ryan!! Seriously, I know each new sequels always have new “twists to make the series always feel fresh and original.”[1] The Dream Team’s ambition is clear: creating 6 ‘Dream Chronicles’ games with 6 separate concepts!! Love that, love that!! :) ) Keep going, fans beside your team!!! :x

Some people call ‘The Book of Air’ is a ‘step backward’ but I, positively, think your team took risk successfully. :) At the end of the day, ‘The Book of Air’ still peaks highly on many casual game charts and numerous its high scores will be added to PlayFirst global high score.

Just one minor suggestion: I hope your team balance between the game value and its finance. Like, if the game is short, setting-up-for-the-next-game but high-pricing, people judge its price all the time, they even don’t care about how amazing the game is. :(

The last, can I know how many times ‘Dream Chronicles’ series have been downloaded up to now??? I read a source that as of July 2009, it had been downloaded 30 million times but what’s about now??? This information is very helpful to me to improve those ‘Dream Chronicles’ articles on Wikipedia. It’s a proof of its popularity. I hope you guy can reveal an approximate number in next press release! :P
